British women's hockey sensation Samantha Quek has been in India lately to promote the Men's Hockey World Cup 2018 which is held in Bhubaneswar. The 18-day mega event got underway on Wednesday with India taking on South Africa in the tournament's curtain raiser.
The Brit will be among the many presenters on the official broadcast channel in India which will provide the live coverage of the tournament. Though, many would have hoped for Samantha Quek to grace the hockey pitch, but this time out she will be present on the sidelines to give her expert insights.
During her stay in the beautiful city of beautiful city of Bhubaneswar, the 2016 Rio Olympics gold medalist was brought down to tears after she saw a painting of herself on a wall in the city during her cab ride.
Sharing her experience on Twitter upon seen the iconic painting, Samantha Quek said that she almost "swallowed her tongue" when she found it outside a local hospital.
The 30-year-old hockey star was part of the Three Lions squad that claimed a silver at the 2013 European Championship and later went on to win gold at the 2015 edition. She also bagged silver at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Meanwhile, the Indian men's hockey got their tournament off to a flyer after they hammered minnows South Africa 5-0 in the tournament's curtain raiser in front of a packed Kalinga Stadium here on Wednesday.
Simranjeet Singh (43rd, 46th minutes), Mandeep Singh (10th), Akashdeep Singh (12th) and Lalit Upadhyay (45th) were on the scoresheet for India against a South Africa, ranked 10 places below India.
Home advantage will play a vital part as the Indian team skippered by Mandeep Singh will be hoping to create history at the tournament as they chase their second World Cup title, with their maiden triumph coming back in 1975.
