Asian Games 2018: Tejinder Pal Singh Wins Gold By Posting Games Record Score

The success of Indian sportspersons in Asian Games 2018 continued as Tejinder Pal Singh won the Gold medal in the Shot Put event. He posted a record score of 20.75m, which is the highest ever in the Games history.

The Indian defeated China's Liu Yang took claimed silver with a throw of 19.52m, while Kazakhstan's Ivan Ivanov settled for bronze with a throw of 19.40m. This record-breaking feat also sees him shatter the six-year-old national record, which was held by Om Prakash Karhana (20.69m). 

Hailing from Punjab, the shot-putter was termed the strongest contender coming into the Asian Games. The Indian certainly lived up to his expectation by also surpassing his personal best of 20.40m, which he set at the 2017 Federation Cup National Senior Athletics Championships in Patiala,

Tejinder Pal Singh Toor set the tone with a throw of 19.96m in his first attempt. He continued his dominance by maintaining his position at the top of the leaderboard by producing a similar attempt in his third attempt. He confirmed gold in style by breaking the Games Record in his fifth and penultimate throw. 

Earlier in the day, squash trio of Joshna Chinappa, Dipika Pallikal and Saurav Ghosal added three bronze medals to India's kitty after they lost in their respective semi-final clashes.

The 2018 Asian Games have proved to be quite a fruitful one for India, with the current medal tally standing at 28 medals - consisting of 7 gold medals. The highlight at the quadrennial event so far has been Vinesh Phoghat, who became the first Indian female wrestler to claim gold in this history of the Asian Games. The Indian men's hockey team have also enjoyed success by recording its biggest ever win after the 26-0 thrashing of Hongkong.

In the 2014 edition in Incheon, India had equaled the record for its best performance in the Games history, amassing 57 medals — including 11 gold. This time out the contingent of 572 athletes will be aiming to up the ante by bringing more laurels to the country.
