Brazil defended their Olympic men's football title following a dramatic extra-time victory over Spain in Yokohama on Saturday.

Spain had won the gold medal in 1992 and were also seeking their second Olympic title.

Matheus Cunha put Brazil ahead in the first half before Mikel Oyarzabal equalised on the hour.

In a nail-biting finish Brazil's substitute Malcolm slotted home the gold medal winner in the 108th minute.

Mexico beat Japan 3-1 in the bronze medal match in Saitama on Friday.

France were the surprise gold medallists in men's volleyball, downing the Russian Olympic Committee side in five tense sets, coming through 25-23, 25-17, 21-25, 21-25, 15-12.

This is the first time that France have ever made it past the quarter-finals in Olympic competition.

Argentina beat Brazil to claim the bronze.

Meanwhile, Feryal Abdelaziz blazed a trail for Egypt by winning the first Olympic karate gold medal in the women's over 61kg kumite, beating Azerbaijan's Iryna Zaretska to win Egypt's second Olympic gold medal since 1948.

Greco-Roman wrestler Karem Gaber's gold in Athens in 2004 was the nation's only other gold in the past 73 years.

Iran's Sajad Ganjzadeh won the Olympic gold l in men's over 75kg kumite after his final opponent Tareg Hamedi was given a disqualification penalty for a spectacular kick on Ganjzadeh, who lay motionless and was removed on a stretcher.

After a few minutes of discussion among the officials on the sidelines, the referee called the match for Ganjzadeh by disqualifying Hamedi.

Ryutaro Araga of Japan and Turkey's Ugur Aktas won bronze.
