In the wake of continuing protests at the death in police custody of black American George Floyd in Minneapolis a week ago, five-time Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton has posted on social media an apparent criticism of those in F1 'remaining silent'.

"I'm one of the only people of colour and yet I stand alone," Hamilton, who has spoken out on the sport's need for greater diversity in the past, said.

"I do not stand with those looting and burning buildings but those who are protesting peacefully," he added.

"There can be no peace until our so called leaders make change. This is not just America, this is the UK, this is Spain, this is Italy and all over. The way minorities are treated has to change."

Floyd died on 25th May after a white police officer held him down by pressing a knee into his neck until he stopped breathing - the officer was subsequently fired and has been charged with murder.
