Indian boxing legend Mary Kom scripted history at the World Boxing Championships after she won her record-equaling sixth gold medal at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi.
The 35-year-old defeated Ukraine's Hanna Okhota to claim top honors in the 48kg light flyweight class category. The Indian was made to toil hard against the Ukranian who is also a European champion and silver medalist at the Youth World Championships. Mary Kom was declared the winner by a unanimous decision.
To make it sweeter, Mary Kom managed this incredible feat on home soil, for which was completely ecstatic. Her victory knew no bounds of joy as it was her second win title win in front of her home crowd after the 2006 win in Delhi. Speaking to the reporters after her win, she dedicated her latest triumph to her fellow countrymen. "I would like to dedicate this win to my country," Mary Kom said after winning gold at World Boxing Championships.
In the process, she has also inscribed her name into the history books of world boxing after she became the first woman boxer to win six gold medals in the medals in the competition. She also equaled the record of Cuban legend Felix Savon, as one of the most successful boxers in the history of the competition.
Mary Kom entered the tournament as one of the most experienced campaigners with a remarkable tally of five gold medals and a silver to her name. She last won a world championship medal in 2010 -- a 48kg category gold. Enroute to the final, India's boxing champ defeated North Korea's Kim Hyang Mi in the semi-final and China's Wu Yu in the quarterfinals.
Adding to her already glittering trophy cabinet, Mary Kom has won six medals at the World Boxing Championships which includes six golds (2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010) and one silver (2001). And now her latest win takes her to medal tally to seven in the tournament.
Her record-medal haul takes her past Irish boxer Katie Taylor who has won five golds and a bronze, in terms of overall medals won. However, Taylor now plies her trade in the professional circuit.
