British ultra-endurance cyclist Mark Beaumont said on Monday 18th September 2017 that he felt elation and "utter relief" after he obliterated the record for circumnavigating the globe on a bicycle.

The adventurer set off from France in July with the intention of completing his journey in 80 days, but Beaumont arrived back in Paris on day 79 of the journey - 24 hours ahead of schedule.

The Scot had succeeded in knocking 44 days - a third - off the previous Guinness World Record of 123 days.

Edinburgh-based Beaumont, then 34, completed the epic 18-thousand-mile (28.970 kilometres) Artemis World Cycle challenge despite suffering three serious falls from his bike.

He also had to cope with varied conditions, such as fierce head winds, sub-zero temperatures and forest fire smog.

Beaumont's target - 80 days - was inspired by Jules Verne's novel Around The World In Eighty Days.
