Mizoram to get centre of excellence for boxing

The central government has sanctioned Rs 5 crore for setting up a centre of excellence for boxing in Mizoram, state minister Robert Romawia Royte said on Friday.

The central government has sanctioned Rs 5 crore for setting up a centre of excellence for boxing in Mizoram, state minister Robert Romawia Royte said on Friday.

Speaking at a function to felicitate Khelo India participants from Mizoram, Royte said the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs has sanctioned the money.

The sports minister said the government is mulling to make allocations in the state budget to assist and promote talented sportspersons.

Royte also announced the extension of state youth service's academy course from two years to four years to help sportspersons to find suitable jobs.

He said that the government would take steps to improve sports infrastructures and promote sportspersons through policy changes.

The state government felicitated 77 sportspersons, who represented Mizoram in the recently-concluded Khelo India Youth Games in Guwahati.

In the national event, held from January 10 to 22, Mizoram took part in seven disciplines and won three gold medals, two silvers and five bronzes.
