Japan on Friday pressed ahead with its first coordination meeting for the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, to discuss how to make the Games safe amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The meeting was attended by infectious disease experts, Japan Olympic Committee members and government officials.

After being postponed from summer 2020 due to the pandemic, new 2021 dates of July 23 to August 8 for the Olympics and August 24 to September 5 for the Paralympics were selected.

Five such meetings are scheduled to be held before the end of 2020.

A poll this month of almost 13,000 Japanese companies showed 53.6% want the games cancelled or postponed again.

A survey in July found two-thirds of the public also favour another postponement or cancellation.

The IOC (International Olympic Committee) has said if the Olympics can't happen in 2021, they will be cancelled.
