Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo took pole position ahead of the Portuguese Grand Prix on Saturday, after Francesco Bagnaia was penalised for a yellow glag infringement.
Ducati rider Bagnaia set what he thought was a new track record at Portimao only to be relegated to 11th for the race itself in the aftermath of a crash involving home favourite Miguel Oliveira.
Quartararo, who won the Doha GP last time out, clocked 1 minute 38.862 seconds and was restored to top spot, with Alex Rins of Suzuki second.
Championship leader Johann Zarcob will start third, with Jack Miller alongside in fourth on another Ducati.
Franco Morbidelli (Yamaha) was fifth fastest, ahead of six-time MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez (Honda), who admitted on Friday he was battling nerves in his latest comeback from the broken right arm he suffered at the Spanish Grand Prix last summer.
Britian's Sam Lowes took pole in Moto2 qualification, while Andrea Migno of Italy was fastest in Moto3.
