Around 18 months ago, Tiger Woods was confined to the bed with niggling back injuries. And in a last-resort to return back to the sport, he was going to have his fourth operation. However, there were doubts in the minds of many if the golf great would be the same dominant force the world has seen.
But on Sunday, there were tears of joy at the East Lake Golf Club as Tiger Woods claimed his first title in more than five years. The Tour Championship win was more special as it has been regarded as one of the best comeback victories in the history of sport, thus putting a slap on the face of his critics who thought the former world number one's career was all but over.
"I just can’t believe I pulled this off,” Woods, 42, said at the trophy presentation for his 80th PGA Tour win. He now sits two shy of Sam Snead’s career record. When asked about his plans to surpass that record, Woods added: "Maybe I’ll keep chipping at that number, and maybe surpass it.”
Tiger Woods had flirted with victory several times this year, with his thrilling late charges but always fizzled out in the final hurdle. But, Woods ensured this time was going to different, as he triumphed in outstanding fashion. During the three days, Tiger Woods was seen rolling back the years as he owned the course at the Tour Championship with performances that were reminiscent of his methodical yet magical approach.
While his performances served as a visual spectacle, his fans couldn't keep calm as Woods was racing towards his first victory in five years. The excitement of fans knew no bound as they swamped the golf champ as he marched towards the final stretch to complete the final touches of his remarkable win. The revelers followed him chanting 'Tiger! Tiger! Tiger!" which called for his security marshalls to circle around him and hold the crowd back.
The crowd circled the green as Woods prepared to put the 18th hole of the East Lake Golf Club. And just when he finished his two-shot victory with a tap-in for par, the crowd erupted to congratulate Tiger Woods on his victory.
This win will be remembered for a long time by the three-time Major Championship winner, because of the rough patch he has suffered over the last decade. Not only injuries but the controversy surrounding his divorce, which led to him losing out on sponsors and tarnishing the legacy he had built over the years. But now it is safe to say, TIGER IS BACK!
