Bianca Andreescu becomes highest-ranked Canadian in Women's tennis

Tennis player Bianca Andreescu became the highest-ranked Canadian ever in Women's Tennis Association ranking after she jumped up one level reaching 4th spot.

Tennis player Bianca Andreescu became the highest-ranked Canadian ever in Women's Tennis Association (WTA) rankings. She has jumped up one spot and now ranks at the fourth position in the recent rankings which were out on October 21. Tennis Canada, a national governing body of tennis in Canada, tweeted about the achievement. In the month of September this year, the 19-year-old became the first Canadian to win a grand slam after defeating Serena Williams at the US Open. With this, she became the youngest Grand Slam champion since Maria Sharapova.

When Andreescu defeated Serena Williams

The young Canadian champion clinched the US Open title defeating Serena Williams in a 6-3, 7-5 game. She said that she knew this would happen as she knew her idol, Serena Williams, inside out. She always looked up to her and dreamt of playing her one day, she had said. Andreescu knew that Willaims will not let her win without a tough fight. All that she could do afterwards was to be bold and hit big, the way she did earlier in the match, she had said.

Andy Murray all set to make Grand Slam return 

In men's tennis, former champion Andy Murray is all set to make his Grand Slam return at the Australian Open in the month of January next year. The organisers of the tennis tournament announced on October 8 that Murray is healing better and is expected to get fit by the beginning of tournament. He is presently ranked at 289 which is higher than his ranking last week (503). In the year 2018, the tennis star had to withdraw from the Brisbane International and Australian Open because of a hip injury. He had to undergo surgery to recover from it. With passing time, Murray seems confident of getting back to a Grand Slam court. He won the opening match of the Shanghai Masters on October 7 where he defeated Argentina's Juan Ignacio Londero in 3 sets. He also made a quarter-final appearance in Beijing a week ago. The organisers of the Australian Open said that Murray is eager to make a comeback into the Grand Slam which is scheduled in the month of January 2020.
