Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev on Sunday won his third title of the ATP St. Petersburg Open 2019. Medvedev continued his superb form in the second half of the season by beating Croatian Borna Coric 6-3, 6-1. He became the first Russian to claim the St. Petersburg Open trophy since Mikhail Youzhny 15 years ago. He now ranks World No. 4 in ATP rankings.

Daniil Medvedev's statement

On winning the title Medvedev said, “It’s an amazing feeling, I decided that after Cincinnati, my style is going to be to try not to show any emotions when I win. I find it funny for myself for my own reasons, and that’s what I did today, but I was extremely happy and it was tough to hide my emotions. I lost three times to him last year in a row. It was an amazing final and an amazing week. Many people didn’t believe in me this week I came here to win and I did it.”

Medvedev was playing in his fifth consecutive final after Washington, Montreal, Cincinnati and the US Open. He broke Croatia's Coric twice en route to taking the opening set and tightened his grip on the contest with two more breaks in the second to win his sixth career title in St. Petersburg. Earlier, Medvedev has clinched his Nitto ATP Finals berth in New York. He also won 24 of his past 27 matches leading in the ATP Tour in wins this season (54-17).

Coric tried to keep Medvedev off-balance, offering a steady dose of slices to both sides. But the Russian was too consistent and wasn't bothered by any of it for too long. He broke twice more in the second set. Medvedev never faced a breakpoint. “He was the much better player on the court. He did all the aspects better than me. I tried pretty much everything, all the tactics, all that I could think of. It didn't work. He had answers to every question of mine,” Coric said.
