Marin Cilic produced a stunning performance to defeat world number two Daniil Medvedev in straight sets in the fourth round of the French Open on Monday.

The 33-year-old Cilic came fast out of the blocks and produced what he described as "one of the best matches" of his career to upset the reigning US Open champion 6-2 6-3 6-2.

The Croatian, who was also champion at Flushing Meadows in 2014, dominated the 26-year-old and faced no break points throughout the match.

After one hour and 45 minutes under the lights on Philippe-Chatrier, the 20th seed forced his opponent into another error to seal a famous win and inflict the heaviest defeat at a grand slam on the Russian. Cilic will play his first quarter-final in a major since 2018 when he meets seventh seed Andrey Rublev on Wednesday, who earlier advanced to the last eight after Jannik Sinner retired due to injury.

It took until the fourth round, but now it’s the high-seeded men who are exiting the French Open.

No. 2 Daniil Medvedev bowed out with a three-set loss to No. 20 Marin Cilic in a matchup between two past U.S. Open champions at Court Philippe Chatrier on Monday night.

Medvedev joins No. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas, last year’s runner-up, on the way out of the bracket. Tsitsipas lost to unseeded 19-year-old Dane Holger Rune earlier Monday.

While only three of the top 10 women’s seeds got to the round of 32 at this year’s French Open, all of the top 12 men did. And all of the top eight men were in the fourth round.

Medvedev is the reigning U.S. Open champion but had been 0-4 at Roland Garros until getting to the quarterfinals a year ago. This time, he won every set he played until running into Cilic, the 2014 U.S. Open champion, who is now into his third quarterfinal in 16 appearances in Paris.
