Off-court, before the first serve, the Wimbledon final attracted attention because Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle was going to come out to cheer for her friend Serena Williams in action. However, after the conclusion of the game, it was Simona Halep and Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton’s exchange that became the talking point. While the former made history by becoming the first Romanian to win the Wimbledon title, her hopes that the latter would support her turned out to be true as Middleton not only met the Champion, but also lauded her for her ‘incredible game.’
After stunning the 23-time-Grand Slam winner Williams in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, Halep in the post-match interview was asked what she felt about Middleton coming to see the match after her statement of hoping to see the Duchess at the match.
When told that her name would be written on the Honours Board and that she might even meet the members of the Royal Family since she too will get the privilege to sit in the Royal Box, the 27-year-old replied, “That’s amazing! I didn’t know that, so it’s even more special now. Thank you everyone from the Royal Family and it’s been an honour to play here and win my second Grand Slam.”
Markle and Middleton were seen smiling in the stands then after the 2018 French Open winner’s statement.
Even netizens loved the on-court moment of Halep ‘fangirling’ and ‘blushing’ over the Duchess and even called it the ‘best.’
Later, Halep and Duchess of Cambridge met and the latter lauded the tennis star, “Really well done. It was so inspiring to watch, you played an incredible game, it was really impressive. So congratulations and enjoy the celebrations.”
