India’s shocking 2-1 loss to Sri Lanka in the three-match ODI series exposed a glaring weakness in their lineup, the inability to effectively counter spin bowling. The Men in Blue, once renowned for their mastery over spinners, found themselves struggling to cope with the spin-friendly conditions that Sri Lanka strategically employed to dismantle India’s batting order. The series loss, which came just a month after the 2024 T20 World Cup, sent shockwaves through Indian cricket, raising serious concerns about the team’s preparedness for upcoming challenges.

This decline in spin-batting prowess is a relatively recent phenomenon. Over the past five years, Indian batsmen, who were once considered among the best in the world against spin, have increasingly found themselves at sea against quality spin bowling. Whether it’s the traditional spinners from the subcontinent or the wrist spinners from Australia and South Africa, India’s batsmen have struggled to dominate, often falling prey to deceptive turn and sharp variations.

The urgency to address this issue was underscored by Indian skipper Rohit Sharma after the conclusion of the ODI series against Sri Lanka. “We need to talk about it. It's something we need to look at seriously, into our individual game plans. We need to look into it, do something differently, need to talk about it and come back with different plans,” Rohit stated.
