Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin of India was warned for leaving the crease early at the non-striker's end of Match 28 of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2024, which took place on July 28 at NPR College Ground in Dindigul. Left-arm spinner Mohan Prasath stopped his delivery stride when he saw Ashwin leave his crease during the fifteenth over of the innings. Ashwin halted immediately as well; replays revealed he would have been out had the bails been taken off.
Ashwin is well-known for his participation in non-striker's run outs; he notably dismissed Jos Buttler in the IPL 2019. Speaking candid about the stigma behind such dismissals, he contends that bowlers are unduly under pressure to uphold the “spirit of the game.”
Ashwin also dismissed Sri Lanka's Lahiru Thirimanne for leaving the crease too early during an ODI in 2012; the appeal was eventually dropped by India's captain Virender Sehwag.
The MCC moved the regulation from Law 41 (Unfair play) to Law 38 (Run out), therefore addressing the stigma of non-striker's run outs in 2022 and increasing batter knowledge.
Ashwin was thrown for 15 from 13 balls in the TNPL game. With Shivam Singh getting 70 off 59 balls, his team, the Dindigul Dragons, put 136 runs. Winning by four wickets, the Nellai Royal Kings chased down the mark in 17.5 overs. Ashwin helped with the ball but it was not enough for his team, to win, finishing his four overs with 2/23.
