IND vs ZIM T20I series: Shubman Gill-led Team India outplayed hosts Zimbabwe and comfortably won the five-match series by 4-1. The young blue brigade had to endure a shocking defeat in the series opener, but after that match, they were absolutely clinical and never allowed Zimbabwe to come back into the series. The series was played shortly after India's historic win at Barbados with Rohit and Virat already announcing their respective retirements.
Shubman Gill who is just in the initial phase of his cricketing career was bestowed with the responsibility of donning the leader's hat. Gill had a very average campaign with the bat, but as far as his captaincy is concerned, it was pretty much spot on. The Indian skipper had immaculate set of plans and field settings for everybody in the opponent and read the conditions better as compared to Zimbabwe's Sikandar Raza. After winning the series and while lifting the trophy, it was very interesting to see Shubman Gill follow a tradition set by Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni.
During his captaincy days, MS Dhoni always made it a point to hand over the trophies to the youngsters. Be it his bilateral trophy triumphs or his ICC event victories, Dhoni always followed the same pattern. This culture was passed on to his successors Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as well. Shubman Gill himself is a youngster and it was certainly great to see that he has followed the tradition set by his predecessors.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from T20Is after Team India won their second World T20 title. In his retirement speech Virat Kohli said that he had immense confidence in the young guns of Team India. As Gautam Gambhir takes over coaching duties from Rahul Dravid, the Indian team is entering into a transitional phase. Gautam Gambhir's first stint as Team India skipper starts with India's away tour to Sri Lanka later in July.
