Cristiano Ronaldo was fuming with tears after missing his penalty against Jan Oblak during the extra-time
From missing a vital penalty in extra time to lead his team to a spectacular shoot-out triumph over Slovenia in the Euro 2024 last 16 on Monday, Cristiano Ronaldo moved from despair to ecstasy. Held in Frankfurt, the game was scoreless late into extra time when Ronaldo was given an opportunity to advance Portugal following Diogo Jota's fouling. But Jan Oblak saved his penalty quite beautifully.
Ronaldo was clearly surprised when Oblak blocked his attempt after effectively turning in his previous 29 penalties. Startled and in astonishment, he grasped his head.
Ronaldo started to freely cry while standing with his colleagues as the whistle blowed for half-time in extra time. Joao Palhinha helped him to calm himself and get back on the pitch when play started.
Portugal supporters started chanting "Viva Ronaldo" after the emotional event was shown on the big screen. Star from Real Madrid and Manchester United recovered his concentration right before the penalty shoot-out. Aiming to Oblak's right this time and discovering the corner of the net, he redeemed himself by scoring the opening kick.
Ronaldo showed relief and thanks, raising his hands in a contrite gesture to the Portuguese fans for his past error. Diogo Costa, Portugal's custodian, produced three vital saves that guaranteed their quarter-final spot against France under Roberto Martinez. After the match Cristiano Ronaldo said:
"First it was sad and then it was happiness, that's what football gives you, strange events, a bit of everything," Ronaldo added.
"I didn't make one error this year and Oblak rescued what I most needed.
"Slovenia played the whole game defending; everything becomes difficult when that happens."
Portugal will be facing France in the quarterfinals of the Euro 2024 on Saturday, July 6, 2024.
