Apple launches iPad Mini 2024 with double storage, faster chip in India

In a surprise move, Apple has introduced an upgraded version of the iPad Mini, its smallest tablet since 2021. The 2024 model of the iPad Mini brings a faster A17 Pro chip, which powered last year’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. That means the new iPad is ready for Apple Intelligence features, likely set for debut later this month. The new Mini tablet also has double storage, allowing Apple ’s AI tools to run more efficiently.

“iPad mini appeals to a wide range of users and has been built for Apple Intelligence, delivering intelligent new features that are powerful, personal, and private,” said Bob Borchers, Apple ’s vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.

The new iPad Mini 2024 starts at Rs 49,900 for the 128GB version and goes all the way up to Rs 79,900 for the model with 512GB of storage. It has Purple, Starlight, Space Grey, and Blue options. While the pre-orders for the new iPad Mini are now live on the Apple Store Online, the sale will begin on October 23 through its online store and physical Apple Stores in New Delhi and Mumbai.

The new iPad Mini is a bumped-up version of the last-generation iPad Mini but features a small design change. It just has more colourful options like purple and blue, while the rest of the design is identical to the last model, which introduced the biggest overhaul since the iPad Mini of 2012. Specifications-wise, the new Mini uses an Apple A17 Pro chip, which the company claims is 30 per cent faster than the last generation. It can also offer 25 per cent faster GPU and has a Neural Engine that runs at twice the speed of the previous generation. The base model now has 128GB of storage, instead of 64GB on the last model.

Apple ’s 2024 iPad Mini will be among the devices to run Apple Intelligence, thanks to the new processor and higher storage. “With the power of the A17 Pro chip, the new iPad mini delivers support for Apple Intelligence. Deeply integrated into iPadOS 18, Apple Intelligence harnesses the power of Apple silicon and Apple-built generative models to understand and create language and images, take action across apps, and draw from personal context to simplify and accelerate everyday tasks,” said Apple in a release.

The new iPad Mini also supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing, which is four times faster than software-based ray tracing, along with Dynamic Caching and hardware-accelerated mesh shading. Apple has equipped the 2024 iPad Mini with faster Wi-Fi 6E for up to twice the performance of the previous generation. It also has a cellular version with 5G support, while the USB-C port on its bottom is now twice as fast as the previous generation, offering up to 10Gbps transfer speeds. The iPad Mini has a 12MP wide camera on the back and a 12MP ultrawide camera on the front, with support for Centre Stage. It also supports Apple Pencil Pro.
