Apple ’s mega event next week will likely see the debut of the next-generation iPhone devices. Dubbed iPhone 16, the upcoming series will primarily focus on better software experience, underscoring Apple’s efforts in pushing generative artificial intelligence. However, the iPhone 16 and its advanced model, iPhone 16 Pro, will also likely bring hardware upgrades to woo customers, including new cameras that would showcase Apple’s latest innovation as it hopes to counter Google.

Rumours are rife that Apple has planned significant camera and photography upgrades for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro. While the company will maintain the distinction between the camera prowess of Pro and non-Pro models, they will most likely have newer features compared to the existing iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models.

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus may retain dual cameras from previous models, but feature better optical zooming capabilities. Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and other insiders have reported that the iPhone 16 duo will continue with a 48MP wide camera and a 12MP ultrawide camera, but use a vertical alignment instead of diagonal. The ultrawide camera, specifically, will use a larger F2.2 aperture instead of F2.4, letting more light into the sensor for better low-light photographs.

Apple ’s iPhone 16 Pro models, however, will gain substantial camera improvements. Even though the camera design may continue to be the same, the three cameras on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max’s back will have upgraded sensors. The main camera will feature a 48MP wide sensor with F1.78 aperture, capable of capturing 12MP telephoto photos with 2x optical zoom. The ultrawide camera will jump to a 48MP sensor, as opposed to the 12MP sensor on the previous model. This sensor will use pixel-binning technology to retain more details in photographs even in low-light conditions. According to reports, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will offer users at least two photography modes for better control for ultrawide shots. Both iPhone models may also house a 48MP camera for ProRAW shots, mostly suitable for professional photography.

While the information comes from reliable sources, Apple has yet to confirm them, but that should not take long since the event kicks off at 10.30 PM IST on September 9.
