It's no longer a secret that Facebook is working hard to impress young users, especially those who are deserting Facebook and at the same time, spending most of their time on Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok and many such emerging, youth-centric platforms.
Recently, we saw a report that the dead may outnumber the living on Facebook within fifty years and if that's not alarming enough for Facebook then we don't know what is because it questions Facebook's growth in terms of the number of users registering on Facebook in the long run.
Facebook clearly wants to fix it before it's too late. And what's the better way to deal with it? Well, getting into a matchmaking business and that's what Facebook has been talking about lately, in addition to its privacy vision, of course.
In fact, Facebook has been talking about its efforts around this whole dating app thing for quite some time now and while it isn't fully ready just yet, Facebook has announced a new feature at its F8 Developer conference: Secret Crush.
Facebook is expanding Facebook Dating to 14 more countries as a result of which it will now be available in a total of 19 countries. Facebook Dating is slated for launch in the U.S. before the end of 2019. Now that Facebook is adding this new feature called 'Secret Crush' to it and that's not limited to total strangers or friends-of-friends, all you need to do is choose up to 9 friends you like.
If they have registered for Facebook Dating, they will receive a notification that some friend as a crush on them. If they add you as a secret crush too, then you are both notified about it and then you two can chat on Messenger.
There is a possibility that users might spam the feature and keep people adding and removing from their crush until they find a match, and that will result in another headache as users might get bombarded with so many notifications.
To address these concerns, Facebook only lets users add up to 9 users per day, after which users can sub out only one person per day.
Additionally, there's no way to know whether the person who has a secret crush on you is interested in being more than just friends. So we don't know for sure what purpose does Secret Crush actually solve. It will be interesting to see how this feature plays out in the future.
Facebook initially announced plans to foray into online dating place at the company's F8 developer conference last year. Right now, we have no information on when Facebook dating will be available to all users in India.
