Social networking giant Facebook might be testing messages back into its main app, eliminating the need for a separate, standalone Messenger app. Recently, Facebook was spotted testing a new function that lets users interact with their friends over messages right inside the main Facebook app.

Famous tipster and reverse-engineering specialist Jane Manchun Wong has posted screenshots offering a glimpse of what the feature would be all about. According to screenshots posted by Wong, the update will add a new Messenger button at the top right corner of the app. By tapping the Messenger icon inside the Facebook app, users can access their messages and conversations without having to install a separate, standalone Messenger app.

"Facebook is bringing the Chats back to the app for preparing integrated messaging," Wong said.

In 2015, Facebook launched a dedicated website interface through messenger.com and separated the messaging functionality from the main Facebook app, making it mandatory for users to either use the web interface or download the standalone Messenger app.

After separating from the main Facebook app, Messenger has at least over a billion monthly active users.

Responding to Wong's screenshots, one user had this to say:

"This is really amazing. As soon as it comes back, I will re-install the app! Wow, I have never been this excited about something that should have been preserved. I need to find who did this, add them on LinkedIn, and send them a pizza or something."

Another user said they will definitely uninstall the Messenger app if the chat feature becomes available in the main Facebook app again.
