Google Maps rolled out a new change that makes it possible to combine your transit directions with other available modes of transport such as biking and ridesharing. A product manager at Google Maps Vishal Dutta puts it simply. He says 'so you can travel that first or last mile with ease. Google Maps helps users with directions to help them reach their destination. Whether you may be driving, biking or simply taking a walk, Google offers directions accordingly.
In its blog post, Google explains a scenario where you take public transport (subway) from your friend's house while your apartment is somewhat far from the station, and walking is not an option. In that situation, it may be ideal if you consider a ridesharing option. In India, we have ridesharing options from Uber, Ola, etc. Or maybe, you are headed to work and you need to ride your bike to your nearest bus station. In those kinds of situations, new Google Maps changes will turn out to be helpful.
Step 1: Go to Google Maps and enter your destination in the search box.
Step 2: First tap on Directions. Then tap on the Transit tab.
Step 3: You'll see available routes for biking and ridesharing that pair with transit directions.
Step 4: For ridesharing, you'll see all the relevant information about cost, wait time, traffic, bus/train departure time, etc.
Step 5: You can choose a rideshare provider and other ride options.
Step 6: For bikers, Google Maps will show routes tailored to them
"All of this information is automatically factored into your total travel time and ETA so you can know exactly when you’ll get to your destination," Dutta said in his blog post. "Transit directions paired with biking and ridesharing will start rolling out in the coming weeks on Android and iOS in 30 countries around the globe, with more coming soon."
