Google Maps can now communicate to you in your local language in a new place that you visit. You need to just activate the speaker that is now present beside the name of a place/address to get the name and details of that particular entity in the local language. Communication, in a foreign location/country, could get potentially simpler with this. The biggest plus is that the chances of you getting fleeced by local taxi drivers, is less with the new Translator functionality in Google Maps.

Google Translate’s Text-to-Speech technology

Now, all the new landmarks in your new city/destination in Google Maps would have the speaker icon. Just search for these landmarks and tap the speaker icon to have Maps say the name in the local language. You could also have conversations with people in your new city. Maps' text-to-speech technology is also said to be updated to be capable enough of detecting new languages and the phonetics involved in relatively longer conversations.

“For instance, if your phone is set to English and you’re looking at a place of interest in Tokyo, you’ll see the new speaker icon next to the place’s name and address so you can get a real-time translation,” states Google in an official blog post. This new feature in Google Maps is all set to reach both Google Android as well as Apple iOS devices, in November 2019. As of now, there is support for 50 languages.

The above enhancements are now amongst features such as listing of over 57,000 public toilets in as many as 2,300 cities in India. Then, there is the voice guidance customized for the visually impaired. Finally, Google Maps could also help you make reservations of tables at your restaurants.
