Facebook-owned photo and video-sharing platform Instagram has rolled out an AMOLED dark theme on Android, according to xda-developers. Dark themes have been gaining popularity over the last few months. Some of the recent updates to the Android and iOS operating system have enabled native support for Dark theme and dark mode across apps. Google has already added dark themes to most of its apps and over the last few weeks, we also have a sudden rise in terms of the number of third-party apps adopting dark modes. Meanwhile, there are also some apps like Instagram that are taking time to add dark themes on Android. Now Instagram, with its most-recent Alpha update, has added a dark theme to its Android app. Since it happens to be an AMOLED Dark theme, background colours are black.

Dark theme in the Instagram app is not final yet and Instagram is still working on the feature. As XDA points out, the Dark mode is not entirely dark in all parts, though. However, it covers almost the majority of the UI elements on Instagram. Majority of Google apps adopting Dark mode have opted for the Dark Gray theme. While AMOLED Black doesn't save more battery than Dark Gray, screenshots reveal a nice contrast between gray and black parts. That makes content more comfortable to see without having to change the actual content on Instagram. However, this doesn't affect the actual pictures on Instagram. As folks over at XDA notes, bright images still look polished and white parts in photos will remain unchanged.

How to get Dark mode on Instagram right now

You can enable Dark mode on Instagram right now. All you need to do is update your Instagram app to the latest version. However, you will need to download the Instagram version 114.0.0.024 from a third-party website. You will also need to enable 'Unknown Source' to download and install APKs from the third-party websites so that you can download the Alpha build of the Instagram app on your smartphone. Enable your phone’s built-in dark mode. Meaning, only Android 10 users will be able to enable Dark mode on Instagram. You can also enable Dark mode in case you have a Samsung Galaxy device running One UI. In case you don’t have Android 10 or One UI, you will have to wait for Instagram to add a toggle in the settings on Instagram.
