In the world of mobile apps, there is absolutely no shortage of creativity, entertainment and of course talent. There are so many apps these days trying to find new ways and techniques to keep users engaged. We have come across Morphin - a new app that can instantly CGI your face into fun GIFs and memes that look funny and you will definitely have some fun time checking out all its features. The only sad part, it is not fully prepared. So, it goes without saying that you will face a few snags here and there. I put Morphin to test and based on my experience, here is what I have to say about the app:

Getting started with Morphin

First things first, this is one of those resource intensive-apps that you would not want to stick around with for so long - unless you are really happy with its performance. It ended up eating over 150MB of space, which was too much. Installation was easy, though. Morphin is available to download via Google Play Store (Android) and Apple App Store (iOS). Go over to your respective app stores and download Morphin. It should not take more than 2 minutes (depending on your data connectivity speed). Upon starting the app for the first time, it allows users to either sign up with email or Twitter/Google accounts.

Set up the username. It takes a few more seconds for Morphin to render the app content. What intrigued me the most is Morphin’s chatbot style user instructions. Morphin has tried to gamify the whole user instructions but it doesn’t help much - not that it fails to add any value, but what most people are actually interested in is the actual process that morphs photos into GIFs rather than anything else. However, Morphin makes it clear even before you start that it is an early version and Morphin is still fine-tuning the app. It also helps users get started with the app, how to capture selfies, what should be the ideal lighting condition and so on. The app also lets users select existing celebrity faces.

Capturing the faces

Tap the ‘more options’ icon at the top right corner and go to ‘Faces.’ You can add as many faces as you want. While capturing the selfie, adjust your face accordingly so that Morphin can detect your face. It also provides a ‘Face Check’ indication to tell users if it can recognise their face or not. After you have captured the selfie, all you need to do is select your GIF template. Interestingly enough, there are so many GIFs you can choose from. For example, Tony Stark suiting up like Iron Man, Obama dropping the mic, Wonder Woman and many more. Once you select the GIF, processing your morph takes too much time. To keep your engaged, it will ask users to participate in the quiz.

Observations, Verdict

At the time of writing this, Morphin is not fully ready which sort of justifies its sluggish performance. The good part, it lets users share their GIFs instantly with their friends on WhatsApp. The bad part, there is drastic degradation in terms of quality when shared. GIFs shared on WhatsApp lose details and end up looking distorted, unlike the original ones on Morphin. But all in all, it does a fine job morphing your faces into some pretty interesting and popular GIFs. Morphin needs to fix the compression issues to avoid the loss of GIF quality while sharing it on WhatsApp.
