Snapchat may be developing its own gaming platform for developers next month, Cheddar reports. Snap is hosting its first-ever partners summit in Los Angeles on April 4 to bring all its developers and content creators under one roof. Snapchat will reportedly unveil its gaming platform during this summit. The platform may be internally codenamed “Project Cognac.”

The report citing someone familiar with the development says that Snapchat will also announce more video initiatives such as original shows and the tagline on the invitation reads - "Less talk. More play," hinting the arrival of gaming platform.

Snap last year acquired an Australian gaming studio Prettygreat for $8.6 million to strengthen its forthcoming push into gaming. One of the Prettygreat employees was the brain behind some of the big hits in mobile gaming such as “Fruit Ninja” and “Jetpack Joyride.”

Multiple news outlets have reported about Snap's investment in different gaming companies. In addition to Prettygreat, Snap had also acquired a web-based game engine startup PlayCanvas. In mid-2018, The Information first reported about Snap's efforts around gaming platform.

Snap refused to respond to Cheddar's story.

Snap's interest in gaming is hardly surprising. In early 2018, Snap had launched its own augmented reality (AR) games for Snapchat app. In 2017, China's tech giant Tencent had acquired about the company's 10 per cent of publicly traded shares.

Tencent has been very successful in the gaming industry. Tencent's “King of Glory” and “League of Legends” have been highly-popular. So we can safely assume that Tencent will lend Snap a helping hand to bolster its push into gaming.

However, at the time of writing this, we don't know for whether Tencent or its game publisher Riot Games will have any kind of involvement in the launch of Snap’s forthcoming gaming platform next month.

Gaming could lead Snap to some new ways to generate business and revenue for the company and it can be anything, right from advertising to in-app purchases, who knows. Snap's revenue grew 36 per cent to a record $390 million in recent days.
