Twitter’s existing dark mode is about to become even darker since the company is rolling out a new update called ‘lights out.’ The existing dark mode on Twitter is more of a dark blue but that is about to change pretty soon. Twitter has announced a new update that paints it pitch black shade, in addition to a dark blue one, which is ideal for OLED panels, particularly iPhones. Meaning, ‘lights out’ is an extension to Twitter’s existing dark mode and it does not replace its current offerings. With the announcement, Twitter has also made a point that it does listen to user requests. Here is what Twitter has to say:

“It was dark. You asked for a darker! Swipe right to check out our new dark mode. Rolling out today.”

As you can see, Twitter also demonstrates how to activate ‘lights out’ inside the app’s settings. All you need to do is navigate to Settings and Privacy > General settings > Display and sound. Now, Toggle the ‘Dark mode’ slider. Then, you will have to toggle the additional slider ‘Lights out’ to make the app’s interface even darker. Unfortunately, the ‘lights out’ update is currently limited to iOS users and we don’ know whether Twitter is planning to roll it out for Android users anytime soon. The pitch black ‘lights out’ update was promised by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey in January.

Most of today’s flagships phones including iPhones feature an OLED screen, and the pitch black can certainly help the handset save some battery. OLED panel only lights up non-black Pixels. This way, Twitter’s battery consumption can be reduced to some extent. What’s more, folks over at Twitter also argue that pitch black background helps reduce eye strain in low light conditions. Many popular apps these days are working on dark mode. Facebook Messenger recently introduced dark mode to its mobile app which is pitch black. WhatsApp, on the other hand, is also working on a dark mode update.
