Two More Lawmakers Add To Chorus Against TikTok Data Collection And Fake News
TikTok comes under criticism again in the parliament.
Concerns regarding usage of TikTok and data collection that had come under criticism in the Parliament – first by Member of Parliament (MP) Shashi Tharoor, have now got more voices in the form of MPs Pinaki Mishra and Jayadev Galla. Both the Parliamentarians expressed concerns over ByteDance to which TikTok is affiliated.
Here, both the MPS expressed concern with regard to the spread of non-genuine content on TikTok and voiced apprehensions about user data collection. In this regard, these MPs – belonging to the Biju Janata Dal and Telugu Desam Party respectively lend substance to protests over TikTok in India where a cross-section of activists have even called for a ban on the popular short video sharing application (app).
At this point in time, TikTok has continued to remain popular in India and has even led to incidences wherein a woman in Tamil Nadu managed to locate her husband on the platform, after a reported period of three years. The husband had earlier abandoned the woman and kids. The woman was contacted by an acquaintance who found a man resembling the latter's husband on TikTok.
Ban on apps
TikTok’s ban call joins that of PUBG where there have been heated debates on whether the battle-royale game should be banned (some countries banned and later lifted restrictions) due to promotion of violent and aggressive behaviour amongst children leading to insignificant overall development in children.
As far as Tik Tok is concerned, the application faced bans in India due to a Madras High Court order which was later modified and allowed downloads of the app to continue. With MPs now having expressed concerns over TikTok, it remains to be seen as to whether there would be reactions from top lawmakers in the country.
