Let's face it, emojis have become a major part of our texts whether it's while using apps like Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram or anything else for that matter. We now have emoji to represent and express almost everything including different food, animals, places, country flags, sadness, happiness, anger et al. And the little emojis have managed to express on our behalf on our social media posts or one on one chat conversations. Reason why there is now a World Emoji Day.

That's right. Today is World Emoji Day! Yes, July 17 is famously displayed on the Calendar Emoji. That is why Unicode Consortium, a non-profit organisation that selects and governs the emoji used by all the smartphones and platforms worldwide, chose it as the date for World Emoji Day. In celebration of World Emoji Day, Apple has shown its new emoji collection for 2019 for the first time.

As approved by Unicode Consortium earlier this year, the set of new emoji this year includes a number of additions in the form of a waffle, sari and flamingo. Previously Unicode had announced a full list of new emoji for 2019 including 59 new emoji with 171 variants for gender and skin tone that makes the total count of 230 while Tinder's successful petition had emoji representing heterosexual and same-sex couples of different skin tones approved by Unicode.

The new set of emoji is coming to Apple's iOS and macOS platforms later this year. They were originally proposed by the iPhone maker last year and approved by Unicode in March 2019. Apple users will also be able to change the skin tones for the people holding hands emoji. Meanwhile, this is what Apple has to say in its latest press release:

"To celebrate World Emoji Day, Apple is previewing a selection of new emoji coming this fall, revealing the newest designs that bring even more diversity to the keyboard, alongside fun and exciting additions to popular categories of food, animals, activities and smiley faces," Apple said.

"In a major update to the Holding Hands emoji typically used to represent couples and relationships, users will now be able to select any combination of skin tone, in addition to gender, to personalize the people holding hands, opening up more than 75 possible combinations," it added.

Apple also said that additional emoji categories are also getting updated with a new smiley face for yawning, a one-piece swimsuit, new food items including a waffle, falafel, butter and garlic, and new animals such as the sloth, flamingo, orangutan and skunk.
