Amazon is bringing its Alexa Developer Rewards Program to India. What this essentially means is that Amazon will now reward developers in India who build ‘engaging’ skills for Alexa. The Alexa Developer Rewards Program will co-exist with the Alexa Developer Incentive Program, which offers developers rotating perks like devices and swag, Amazon said in a press statement on Tuesday.

India is notably the fifth market to get the Alexa Developer Rewards Program after the US, UK, Japan, and Germany – highlighting the growing significance of the world’s largest democracy in Amazon’s global business strategy.

Alexa made its India debut in October 2017 with 10,000 skills and in less than 60 days of the Alexa India skill store going live, Amazon had added more than 1,000 new skills to the store. In the last one year, it has doubled its skill count.

“Since we introduced Alexa in India last year, thousands of developers have published informative and engaging skills on the India store. In just over a year, the number of skills available for customers has doubled from 10,000 to more than 20,000,” Dilip RS, who is country manager for Alexa Skills, Amazon India said while announcing the Alexa Developer Rewards Program for India.

A lot of this developer (and brand) engagement comes from Amazon’s developer-friendly approach in India. Amazon has over 40,000 developers on-board now, making India “one of the fastest growing developer bases for the company outside of the US.” And not just developers, children as young as 13 are building skills for Alexa.

“We’re focused on enabling developers to create even more useful and engaging experiences for our customers, and we’re excited to see what experiences the developer community creates next.”

The Alexa Developer Rewards Program is another step in getting more developers on-board, as also a chance for Amazon to get even more localized Alexa skills – in turn making its voice assistant more useful and accessible to users in India. Amazon lists the following skill categories that will be eligible for its rewards program - Education & Reference Food & Drink Games, Trivia & Accessories Kids Health & Fitness Lifestyle Music & Audio Productivity.
