Rumours that Apple is working on a sleep tracking feature for the Apple Watch have been doing the rounds for a while now. The feature was in fact said to debut with the Apple Watch Series 5 launched recently, but it didn’t. That's not to say that Apple isn’t working on the feature anymore. A reference to Apple’s possibly in development Sleep app has been spotted doing the rounds in the App Store with a description that reads, “set your Bedtime and wake up in the Sleep app.” The reference comes courtesy a screenshot spotted in the listing of Apple’s pre-installed Alarms app for the Apple Watch. The report notes that since there’s no Sleep app or even a reference to it in the Alarms app on watchOS 6.0.1 or watchOS 6.1 beta, chances are it could have been leaked accidentally by Apple.

Apple’s sleep tracking feature is internally codenamed Burrito, according to previous reports. Apple will reportedly call it “Time in Bed tracking” and the feature will be accessible via its own dedicated companion Sleep app – therefore a reference to it spotted in the wild raises hopes that the feature may be coming soon. While asleep, the feature will allow the Apple Watch’s wide array of sensors to tack the user’s sleep quality as a factor of their “movement, heart rate, and noises.” The Apple Watch will automatically enable Do Not Disturb in bedtime mode.

Apple is also simultaneously working on a feature that would remind users to charge their Apple Watch should it be low on juice before entering the bedtime mode. The Apple Watch will also automatically turn off the alarm should the user wake up and start their day in advance.

The sleep tracking feature will reportedly not require any new hardware – which could mean the feature has a high probability of working on existing Apple Watch devices. This means, the feature could just be rolled out via a software update in future. That said, there was speculations that Apple may launch the feature alongside the Apple Watch Series 5 – making it one of its headlining features. Since that did not happen, Apple maybe working to get it right before a commercial rollout.
