Smart TV sets and AI-enabled voice assistants including Google's Assistant, Amazon Alexa and Apple Siri collect data they could use against you, claim experts. Infact, scientists have warned users against Smart TVs and voice-activated assistants over their data collection practices, which could certainly get you in trouble.
According to reports, Smart TVs and voice-activated Assistants like Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant have what it takes to tell if you are cheating on your partner. Major tech companies now integrate their voice-activated Assistant into devices like Smart TVs and they are designed to listen to your conversations and collect as much information about you as possible in order to serve you better with the help of Machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI).
Due to their very nature to keep a tab on all your activity, these products and services end up collecting a lot of data on you including your conversations and location, which infact can be analysed to draw a conclusion about your relationships, reports Mirror.
According to Ashwin Machanavajjhala, a former government data adviser Professor, once data reaches their cloud server, there is a lack of transparency about who it is shared with. Prof. Machanavajjhala was speaking at a science conference in Washington.
"Smart TVs and voice assistants can pick up living room chatter, some of which may be shared with third parties," said Prof. Machanavajjhala. "I'm waiting for privacy protections to come in. We need to know what is being collected about us, whether or not we have anything to hide," he added.
Reports mention one in ten people around the UK use smart gadgets. These smart devices are capable enough of harvesting enough data to draw a conclusion about the user's relationship. For example, these devices can tell when you are in a building or share a bedroom, courtesy of sensor logs and smart metres.
"Smart meters can tell you whether an individual is at home and what appliances are used," he said.
According to Prof. Machanavajjhala, when such data is analysed, it can tell fairly accurately if you are cheating on your partner.
