Tablets are a dying breed and foldables are on the horizon – but Samsung is still not giving up on them

Samsung has silently launched the 8-inch Galaxy Tab A 2019 in select markets and although it isn’t a very powerful tablet – S-pen stylus support should make it a viable alternative to the newly launched Apple iPad Mini. Especially for those seeking Android.

The 8-inch Galaxy Tab A 2019 has an 9-inch LCD display with a 1920x1200 pixel resolution. It supports Samsung’s older S-pen that shipped with the Galaxy Note 8 – the S-pen slots into the tablet itself similar to how things are in Samsung’s Note devices.

The Galaxy Tab A 2019 is powered by Samsung’s in-house Exynos 7904 processor paired with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage which is also expandable. The tablet runs Android 9 Pie-based One UI – the same software that drives the company’s high-end Galaxy S10 phones. It has an 8MP rear and a 5MP front camera and packs a sizeable 4,200mAh battery rated to deliver up to 11 hours of web browsing on single charge.

The 8-inch Galaxy Tab A 2019 will be available in both Wi-Fi and LTE connectivity options – Samsung is yet to announce pricing and availability specifics.

The Galaxy Tab A 2019 will be available in the UK, New Zealand, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam to begin with.

Tablets are a dying breed and foldables are on the horizon – but Samsung is still not giving up on them, so it seems, even though it has already announced the Galaxy Fold. There’s also a dearth of good-quality tablets on the Android side of the spectrum, and Samsung is the only company making some viable options. To possibly take on the iPad.

Apple isn’t done with tablets either. Only recently, it announced two new affordable iPad models – the 7.9-inch iPad Mini and the 10.5-inch iPad Air. Both the new iPad models support Apple Pencil (first-generation). The iPad Mini starts at Rs 34,900 for Wi-Fi and Rs 45,900 for Wi-Fi + Cellular - it will be available in 64GB and 256GB configurations. The iPad Air meanwhile starts at Rs 44,900 for Wi-Fi and Rs 55,900 for Wi-Fi + Cellular - it will also be available in 64GB and 256GB configurations.
