Samsung has launched the Galaxy Tab S5e Android tablet in India and while it seems to be the South Korean major’s answer to the iPad Air, one can’t help but notice, the thing looks remarkably like the iPad Pro. The Galaxy Tab S5e is the thinnest and lightest tablet that Samsung has ever built but it’s not a successor to the Galaxy Tab S4 – that remains to be its flagship tablet for now.

The Galaxy Tab S5e comes with a 10.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a 2560x1600 pixel resolution and 16:10 aspect ratio. Under the hood, it has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 processor with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage which is also expandable. Samsung isn’t bringing the 6GB RAM and 128GB storage variant of the Galaxy Tab S5e to India just yet.

There’s Android Pie-based One UI for software and a 7,040mAh battery powering the whole thing (which is claimed to offer over 14 hours of video playback) with support for USB Type-C fast charging.

The USP of the Galaxy Tab S5e is its thin and light metal chassis, and, the tablet also has a screen that stretches near edge-to-edge – the Galaxy Tab S5e (5.5mm, 400g) is not only Samsung’s thinnest and lightest tablet ever, it also offers a whopping 81.8 per cent screen-to-body ratio, which is the most for any Samsung tablet. Samsung has also thrown in quad speakers (plus Dolby Atmos) fine-tuned by AKG into the mix (the iPad Air has dual speakers in comparison).

For productivity, the Galaxy Tab S5e supports Dex but there is no stylus support. The tablet also does not get a headphone jack (Samsung is bundling a dongle in the box).

Elsewhere, the Galaxy Tab S5e has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner and facial recognition tech for biometric authentication. It has a 13MP rear camera and an 8MP front camera, should you be looking to take pictures with it.

The Wi-Fi-only Galaxy Tab S5e has been launched in India at a price of Rs 35,999 while its Wi-Fi +LTE variant will cost Rs 39,999. Samsung will be also selling an optional book cover keyboard (the Galaxy Tab S5e comes with smart pogo connector) that you can purchase separately for Rs 7,999 – for a limited period (until July 31), you can get it for Rs 3,500. The Galaxy Tab S5e will be available for buying from across all leading retail stores, Samsung e-Shop and Samsung Opera House - Galaxy Tab S5e’s Wi-Fi variant will also be available on Amazon India, while the Wi-Fi +LTE variant will also be available on Flipkart.

Samsung is also launching a budget tablet called the Galaxy Tab A 10.1 alongside the Galaxy Tab S5e. Meant largely for students, the Galaxy Tab A 10.1 has a 10.1-inch 1080p LCD screen and an Exynos 7904 processor paired with 2GB RAM and 32GB storage (expandable) under the hood. The all-metal tablet has a 6,150mAh battery and dual stereo speakers. Samsung has launched the Galaxy Tab A 10.1 with Wi-Fi at a price of Rs 14,999, while the Wi-Fi +LTE variant of the tablet will cost Rs 19,999. The Galaxy Tab A 10.1 Wi-Fi variant will be available from Amazon India and Samsung e-Shop starting June 26. The Galaxy Tab A 10.1 Wi-Fi + LTE variant will be available across all leading retail stores, Amazon India, Samsung e-Shop and Samsung Opera House starting July 1.
