Samsung has launched the Galaxy Tab S5e – its thinnest and lightest tablet ever. And while it does look super slick, one can’t help but notice, the thing looks remarkably like the new Apple iPad Pro. It may not be as high-end in terms of specs, but it most definitely is the only Android tablet that can hold a candle to the iPad in terms of look and feel. Also, it doesn’t cost as much, so that’s a plus.

The Galaxy Tab S5e, at a starting price of $399/Euros 420, sits below the premiere Galaxy Tab S4 in hierarchy which means it isn’t exactly a successor. But unlike Samsung’s past ‘affordable’ tablets, this one does not skimp on hardware. It comes with a 10.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a 2560x1600 pixel resolution and 16:10 aspect ratio. Under the hood, it has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 processor with up to 6GB RAM and up to 128GB storage which is also expandable.

There’s Android Pie for software with Bixby 2.0, and a 7,040mAh battery powering the whole thing (which is claimed to offer over 14 hours of video playback) with support for USB Type-C fast charging.

The USP of the Galaxy Tab S5e is its thin and light metal chassis, and it has a screen that stretches near edge-to-edge – the Galaxy Tab S5e (5.5mm, 400g) is not only its thinnest and lightest tablet ever, it also offers a whopping 81.8 per cent screen-to-body ratio, the most for any Samsung tablet. Samsung has also thrown in quad speakers (plus Dolby Atmos) fine-tuned by AKG, for immersive multimedia experiences since a tablet like this one is primarily a content consumption device.

For productivity, the Galaxy Tab S5e supports Dex like the Galaxy Note 9 and Tab S4, but there is no stylus support. The tablet also does not get a headphone jack (Samsung says it will ship a dongle in the box).

Elsewhere, the Galaxy Tab S5e has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner and facial recognition tech for biometric authentication. It has a 13MP rear camera and an 8MP front camera, should you be looking to take pictures with it.

The Galaxy Tab S5e will cost $399 for the 4GB RAM and 64GB variant and will start shipping in the second quarter of 2019 in select markets in black, grey and gold options. A 6GB RAM and 128GB storage version, and versions with cellular (LTE) connectivity will be made available later in the year.
