The next-gen Sony PlayStation (PS) console, which could be called the PS5, would do its bit for the environment. Yes, you heard it right. This is because the console is confirmed to allow users to suspend gameplay with lesser power consumption than that of the current-gen PlayStation 4 (PS4) device. Sony has announced this pledge at the UN Climate Summit wherein it was represented by President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jim Ryan.

The next-gen Sony PS5

Ryan also detailed that the next-gen PS5 would lead to reduction in consumption of electricity usage equivalent to 1000 homes in the United States of America (USA) with its ability to suspend gameplay by consuming lesser power than its current-gen PS4 predecessor. “From an operations point of view, we will complete a carbon footprint assessment of our gaming services and will report the energy efficiency measures we employ at our data centres. We are committed to informing consumers of energy-efficient console set-up and use,” added Ryan. “At PlayStation, we believe games have the power to ignite social change through educating people, evoking emotions, and inspiring hope. We could not be more proud to be part of the Playing for the Planet Alliance and the commitments announced. We look forward to seeing what the industry can achieve together,” he informed.

Sony PS5 rumoured features

At this juncture, the next-gen Sony PS5 has become the subject of intense rumour mills. Some reports have hinted that there would be a solid-state drive (SSD) to store new games. Another report adds that the new console would support backwards compatibility for current-gen PS4 games. The hardware within the PS5 would officially be impressive (as hinted at a recent conference by Sony). Exact details regarding this are expected to surface soon.
