Xiaomi is bringing the Mi LED smart bulb to India but there’s a small catch. You can’t readily buy Xiaomi’s Mi LED smart bulb from Mi.com or Mi Home stores just yet. Xiaomi, in fact, isn’t even sure if its Mi LED smart bulb will ever be available for buying from these channels. This is because Xiaomi is launching the Mi LED smart bulb under its crowdfunding platform in the same way it has launched other lifestyle products like the Mi sunglasses and Mi Men’s Sports Shoes 2 in India.

Crowdfunding is a little different from traditional sales. It is meant largely to gauge buyer interest. The future of the product therefore lies in the hands of the buyers. If enough buyers show interest, Xiaomi will go ahead and make the product available on a broader scale. If not, well, it is likely never going to talk about it again. Which means there’s a 50-50 chance to whether the product will ever be sold beyond the pre-defined crowdfunding period.

The Mi LED smart bulb will go live on Xiaomi’s crowdfunding platform at 12 noon, April 26 – Xiaomi hasn’t announced pricing yet. We also do not know the golden figure that the Mi LED smart bulb will need to achieve to pass, so Xiaomi can bring it to India. All of this should be revealed on April 26.

Xiaomi’s Mi LED smart bulb is like any other smart bulb but because it is a Xiaomi product, there’s a very high possibility that it will be priced very aggressively.

The Mi LED smart bulb works with both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, and can also be controlled though Xiaomi’s Mi Home app. It does not require any connecting bridge of sorts and promises 11 years of lifespan. Xiaomi claims its 10W Mi LED smart bulb can switch between 16 million colours and supports an adjustable temperature range from 1700K to 6500K.

The Mi LED smart bulb was launched alongside the Redmi Y3 and Redmi 7 phones on Wednesday. The Redmi Y3 has been launched in India at a starting price of Rs 9,999 for the variant with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage, going all the way to Rs 11,999 for the top-end variant with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. The Redmi 7 has meanwhile been launched in India at a starting price of Rs 7,999 for the variant with 2GB RAM and 32GB storage, going all the way to Rs 8,999 for the top-end variant with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage.
