Xiaomi’s first Mi-branded smartwatch will be based on the company’s own MIUI software customized for smartwatches. The company has shared a couple of hands-on videos teasing the Mi Watch – or whatever Xiaomi decides to call it – and in it, it has confirmed the software that will drive it. The software inside the Mi Watch will simply be called MIUI for Watch and even though it will be based on Android, it won't be Wear OS.

There were speculations that Xiaomi may launch the Mi Watch with Wear OS even though Google services are banned in China – which makes the whole thing pointless in the first place. A reference to a yet to be published Mi Wear app found in the Wear OS APK recently raised speculation that Xiaomi may be joining in the Wear OS smartwatch bandwagon, with further investigation revealing that the company may call it the Mi Watch. But while a Wear OS-based Xiaomi may be in the works, the smartwatch launching on November 5 will be based on MIUI and not Wear OS.

The Mi Watch will be launched alongside the MI CC9 Pro which is expected to be launched in global markets as the Mi Note 10. Should Xiaomi be looking to bring the Mi Watch to global markets, there’s a chance it could be based on Wear OS – but again, that’s just speculation for now.

Xiaomi founder and CEO Lei Jun has already shared the full design of their upcoming smartwatch and even though the resemblance with the Apple Watch is uncanny, there’s no doubt that it looks stunning. The Mi Watch will likely come with a curved OLED always-on display.

Speaking of features and connectivity, Mijia which is the Xiaomi subsidiary making the Mi Watch, has revealed that the device will support e-SIM for cellular connectivity. The Mi Watch will also support NFC as well as GPS. While hardware isn’t explicitly mentioned, the Mi Watch will possibly be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 3100. More details are awaited
