The Asus ZenFone 5Z is now receiving the Android 9 Pie update in India. Note that Asus had previously confirmed that it would start rolling out the Android Pie update for the ZenFone 5Z starting January 2019, so the rollout is in line with the announcement. The update first arrived in Asus’ home turf Taiwan in late December last year and India seems to be one of the first few global markets to get it soon after.

The ZenFone 5Z has been a runaway hit for Asus especially in India. It brings high-end specs including a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor at a mainstream price but more importantly it sees Asus finally doing some much-needed spring cleaning when it comes to its in-house Zen UI software. The ZenFone 5Z is the first Asus phone to run a clean, near stock version of Android. With the Android Pie rollout, the ZenFone 5Z also becomes the first Asus phone to receive a major Android update in less than a year after launch.

The Android 9 Pie update for the ZenFone 5Z stacks up at 1048MB in size and brings a host of Android Pie features to the phone including a dark mode and new navigation gestures. It brings adaptive RAM, battery and display management, in addition to Google’s Digital Well-Being functionality. Asus seems to have re-worked on the photography aspects, in addition to bringing an “all-new contextual pop-up volume bar and a new Magnifier feature for easier copy-and-paste, and many more.”

Asus notes that the Android Pie update for the ZenFone 5Z is being rolled out in phases which means not every device will get it at the same time. The company has also listed the way to download and install the update should users be looking to do it manually.

--To update the software, a notification might automatically appear on the phone's notification bar. The user just needs to tap on the notification to download the update.

--Once the download is completed, a pop-up notification to install the update will appear: tapping 'Install' will then start the installation.

--The device will reboot during the installation of the update. Users should not turn off the device until the home screen appears.

--If the update notification/prompt is not received, it can be checked and initiated manually via the Settings > System > System Updates menu path.
