Asus is finally rolling out the official stable release of Android 9 Pie software for the Zenfone Max Pro M1, ZenFone Max Pro M2 and ZenFone Max M2 phones in India - Asus was supposed to roll out the update sooner. Although Asus isn’t saying what took it so long, at least, it did stick to its promise of rolling out the update by April 15.

“Sincere thanks to our power users, who participated in the beta program and helped with their feedback to fine-tune the Android Pie software for all users,” Dinesh Sharma, who is head, Mobile Business, Asus India said adding that new software update will be distributed phase-wise automatically via a firmware-over-the-air (FOTA).

The main USP of the Zenfone Max Pro M1, ZenFone Max Pro M2 and ZenFone Max M2 phones is that they run a stock version of Android unlike say the ZenFone 5Z that has Asus’ ZenUI – note that the ZenFone 5Z has already been updated to Android Pie which seems a little out of place since normally you’d expect a phone with stock Android to be updated first.

Since it’s a phased rollout, not every ZenFone will get the update at the same time – Republic World can confirm that the update is now live as our ZenFone Max M2 review unit received it this morning, also bumping the security patch to 5 March 2019.

The Android 9 Pie update should bring core Android Pie features like navigation gesture support, adaptive RAM, battery and display management, in addition to Google’s Digital Well-Being functionality to Asus phones. It will be interesting to see if Asus has some additional features planned for the Zenfone Max Pro M1, ZenFone Max Pro M2 and ZenFone Max M2 with the upcoming update.

“We deeply apologize for missing our previously announced deadline for the Android Pie update. We promise it won’t be the same this time around. We’re bringing the Android Pie to the Zenfone Max Pro M1, Zenfone Max Pro M2 and Zenfone Max M2 latest by April 15th. Thank you all for your patience and continuous support. We promise this Pie will be worth the wait,” Asus had said in a press statement in March.

Major software update delays aren’t uncommon – these things often take time since companies want to roll out only the most stable update with the least possible bugs/compatibility issues. Asus is not the first company late to the Android Pie party and it surely won’t be the last.
