If your BSNL SIM card is now damaged or lost and you require to get a new SIM card, then the current charges of Rs 50 for prepaid users would continue to stay on. Reportedly, this new scheme has been made permanent for now. Earlier, the Rs 50 charge was levied as a promotional initiative valid for a period of 90 days.

Now, as per a TelecomTalk report, both prepaid and post-paid users would need to pay an identical Rs 50 for SIM card replacement, at any of the authorized BSNL centres. These charges are reasonable considering the fact that the telco has proper authorized centres to issue new SIM cards. All due diligence is done by these government authorized centres.

However, the Rs 50 charge sounds high, on paper, when compared to the Rs 20 and Rs 30 SIM replacement charge which a few other competing incumbent telcos charge for SIM card replacements. In fact, Reliance Jio has even been offering replacement SIM cards for free. Nonetheless, the Rs 50 SIM-replacement charge is still nominal, at least on paper.

At this juncture, it is worth remembering that BSNL is now on a recovery path. The state-led telco is also expected to deploy full-fledged 4G services soon throughout India. Also, with the merger of MTNL into BSNL, the subscriber count is also bound to increase. With competition being undoubtedly key criteria, as far as offering next-gen 4G services in the Indian telecom sector is concerned, BSNL could now be a certain leader in this regard. In fact, the telco’s Rs 1699 annual prepaid recharge plan is now valid for an additional 90 days – taking the total validity period to 455 days, from the earlier 365 days. This offers voice calling worth 250 free minutes p er day, along with 2GB data per day and 100 text messages in a day.
