Huawei will launch its Mate X foldable 5G phone in India in the second half of this year, the company said in a statement on Wednesday. The Mate X was launched at MWC 2019 and belongs to the first wave of next-generation foldable devices – Samsung will be also launching its Galaxy Fold foldable phone in India soon.

Although a tentative timeline has not been revealed, Huawei could launch the Mate X in India around the same time it launches the product in global markets - the Mate X will be available for buying in Europe starting from the middle of this year.

“India is an important market for us and we have been consistently investing and expanding our footprint in the market. We are focused on delivering the user experiences that defines the future of smartphone in the smart era,” Wally Yang, senior product marketing director, Huawei Consumer Business Group said in a statement, confirming the “Mate X will make its India debut this year.”

The Mate X’s OLED display folds outwards (you can read out Huawei Mate X hands on here) giving users access to three screen sizes – two independent smartphone-like screens with 6.6-inch and 6.38-inch sizes respectively, and an 8-inch tablet form factor. Huawei calls it a falcon wing design – a design it seemingly took three years to perfect, using a patented hinge with over 100 custom components.

Huawei says it has worked extensively on the software side so users will be able to seamlessly transition between smartphone and tablet mode on the Mate X – Huawei is particularly touting “two columns browsing, side by side or multi-window use for so you can double down on work or entertainment.” The phone is based on Android 9 Pie with EMUI 9 on top.

In terms of core hardware, the Mate X packs Huawei’s Kirin 980 flagship processor with 8GB RAM and 512GB storage, it comes with a total of three Leica-tuned cameras, dual-SIM, and it packs two batteries which entail in a total battery capacity of 4,500mAh with 55W Super Charging which is claimed to offer 85 per cent charge in mere 30 minutes. The Mate X is also 5G-ready courtesy Huawei’s Balong 5000 modem.

Huawei will invariably charge a hefty premium for the Mate X as and when it launches it in India – the Huawei Mate X has been launched in Europe for Euros 2,299 (roughly Rs 1,85,000).
