Lava wants you to throw your TV away and buy the Lava Z62, a budget phone that the home-grown brand is launching in India today. As absurd as it may seem, Lava believes buyers will be willing to exchange their (preferably old) TVs for a brand-new Lava Z62 – a phone that costs Rs 6,060. Registrations for Lava’s one-of-its-kind promotional sales scheme will start from June 18 and winners will be selected “on first come first serve basis.” The TV can be of any type and condition. Lava notes on its official website.

The Lava Z62 is a budget affair with budget specs – but Lava’s “TV Lao, Phone Le Jao” offer adds a unique twist to it. This may be the first time any brand is asking buyers to trade in their TV sets for a new smartphone.

Speaking of hardware specs, the Lava Z62 comes with a 6-inch ‘full-view’ display with curved 2.5D glass - there's no notch or display cutout on this one. The phone is powered by MediaTek’s Helio A22 quad-core processor paired with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage which is also expandable via a micro-SD card slot. The dual-SIM phone runs Android Pie software and features a dedicated Google Assistant button. The Lava Z62 further packs a 3,380mAh battery under the hood.

On to the cameras, the Lava Z62 has an 8MP camera on the rear and a 5MP camera on the front – both cameras are paired with LED flash.

Domestic players like Lava have gone non-existent lately. Even though Lava continues to launch devices from time to time, Chinese brands like Xiaomi and Realme have grabbed on to India’s market share firmly on the back of better specs at increasingly aggressive pricing. Brands like Lava have simply failed to match brands like Xiaomi on specs and feature set, as well as, in terms of affordability. Lava’s “TV Lao, Phone Le Jao” offer seems to be a fresh attempt to generate some new hype – by doing something different Lava is probably looking to draw some attention. And it would be looking to turn that attention into sales. Whether or not it would be able to do that is something only time will tell. There's no word yet on when Lava will start selling the Lava Z62 in India.
