If you’ve been closely following the tech circuit, you’d know the 48MP camera phones have arrived. But if you thought that’s as crazy as crazy could get, well, Lenovo might have a surprise for you. Lenovo is working on a flagship phone called the Z6 Pro, and that phone will come with a whopping 100MP camera – the company has hinted.

Lenovo had first teased the Z6 Pro at MWC 2019 briefly touching upon its seemingly new camera credentials. Although it had not given out a number, it had said that the Z6 Pro will come with something that it is calling a Hyper Vision camera – that will seemingly be able to shoot Hyper Videos. That’s all it said back then, but ahead of its scheduled June launch, Lenovo has started talking more about the Z6 Pro’s camera.

While it isn’t clear if the Z6 Pro will come with just one 100MP camera or if it will be part of a dual/triple camera setup – the specific details of this 100MP sensor are also scarce for now. Note that, current generation 48MP and 32MP cameras use pixel binning to produce 12MP and 8MP effective photos – it is also possible to shoot natively at these high resolutions but that is an entirely different topic of discussion.

Qualcomm has already confirmed that we will see phones with 64MP and 100MP cameras this year – its processors like the Snapdragon 855 can support up to 192MP resolution after all. But there’s always a trade-off to such theatrics – it isn’t theoretically possible to support multi-frame noise reduction and zero shutter lag at such high resolutions. High resolution camera phones, although they let you zoom in more into photos, don’t bring enough advantages – which is possibly why brands like Google, Samsung and Apple are still sticking to 12MP cameras and producing results that none of the existing high-resolution camera phones can achieve at this point of time.

But coming to the Z6 Pro, Lenovo desperately needs hype and a good phone to get back into the game – a 100MP camera phone will be a good re-start, and hopefully it will live up to the hype. The Z6 Pro will be also 5G-ready, Lenovo has confirmed, and it will likely be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855.
