New MNP rules to be enforced from 16 December, old rules still apply

The new mobile number portability (MNP) norms, reducing the time taken to port out, to just two days, would now be effective from 16 December. This was earlier set for 11 November. This means that you could still port out now.

New MNP Rules

MNP is currently working as it is. Operators are accepting port out requests. TRAIO has stated that it wants the telcos to properly complete all tests and then totally enforce the new MNP regime, hence the extended time.“The status of testing has been reviewed and in view of the current status of testing, the Authority vide notification dated 8th November 2019 has extended the timeline for implementation of Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability (Seventh Amendment) Regulations, 2018, from 11th November 2019 to 16th December 2019 giving additional time for reconfirming the desired tests,” stated TRAI in an official press release.

At this juncture, the entire process of MNP takes more than a week – if working days are considered. The UPC is valid for 15 days now. In the new regime, these durations are set to become shorter. These should offer subscribers lots to cheer about, as there are instances wherein subscribers are totally put off by their current telco and subsequently want to shift to newer telcos at the earliesr, without delays.

Now, MNP duration, till 16 December, would still be a week. You could port out, but it would take time. The existing rules continue. Here, it is worth remembering that for port-in subscribers, almost all of the telcos offer custom offers.

In related news, theh BSNL Rs 1699 plan is now valid for a period of 425 days – from the earlier 365 days period. This is an unlimited pack that offers free calls worth of up to 250 minutes in a day, 100 SMS messages. The data offering under this scheme is 2 GB per day.
