The next time you opt for mobile number portability (MNP) to port out from your current operator, then the entire process could be completed in 2 days in case your request is within the same telecom circle. In case you prefer to move to another telecom circle, the request could take as less as 4 days. Currently, the time taken for a complete MNP is 7 working days.

This new guidelines are courtesy the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) which has issued newer guidelines amending the MNP regulations. In addition to these, TRAI has also reportedly suggested that a penalty of Rs 10000 be imposed on a telco in case of incorrectly rejecting MNP claims by users and for supplying of false information (to subscribers) with respect to the port out request.

Also, validity of the Unique Porting Code (UPC) is also recommended by TRAI to be 4 days; currently, the UPC is valid for a period of 15 days from the date since the code is generated and sent to subscribers. This is applicable to all Licensed Service Areas (LSA) of Wireless Operators except the LSAs of India’s North-East, Assam, Jammu & Kashmir.

The new regulations set by TRAI are applicable in the case of individual subscribers. For corporate subscribers opting to port out, TRAI would be allowing as many as 100 numbers in an authorization instruction; up from the earlier 50 numbers. Do share your thoughts on the new TRAI guidelines for MNP.

In related developments, incumbent telco has made its new Rs 289 prepaid tariff plan official. This plan is valid for 48 days and offers 1GB 3G/4Gd ata and unlimited calls along with 100 text messages free per day. Roaming is also free under this scheme. Airtel’s Rs 289 recharge scheme seems to be targeted more at the feature phone users and at customers preferring voice calls over data.
