Oppo will demo its under-display selfie camera tech on June 26 at MWC Shanghai 2019. Ahead of its unveiling, Oppo has teased its one-of-its-kind under-display selfie camera in a promo video, showing off a possible prototype that could boast of such a technology. The phone in question is seen having all-screen and barely any bezels as the display gradually melts into the outer frame. A circular demarcation at the top should let you know where to look when you need the camera, even as it stays hidden at all the other times.

Chances are we may get to hear more about Oppo's under-display selfie camera tech, its use-cases, as well as possible market availability on June 26 – but if the real thing is anything like what we’re seeing in the promo video, well, Oppo might just have built the perfect all-screen smartphone or something very close to it.

Oppo recently demoed its under-display selfie camera on social media and even though the company was quick to note that it would be difficult for an under-display selfie camera to reproduce the same level of quality in photos as a conventional camera, there’s no denying that that’s the next step in smartphone evolution.

The race to build the perfect all-screen smartphone has seen companies experimenting with all kinds of solutions – through notches of varying shapes and sizes and motorized camera modules that pop-up as and when required. But it’s safe to say, none of that is the final solution. We’re already seeing more and more in-display tech flooding the smartphone industry – everything from the fingerprint scanner to the speaker/receiver grille (and sensors) is going under the display thereby negating the need for any display cut out. The selfie camera following the same route doesn’t seem all that surprising.

Oppo hasn't sharing any specifics just yet – the company hasn’t revealed any tentative timeline when we can see its under-display selfie camera inside a commercial product as well. All this could mean only one thing, the technology could be in very early stage as we speak. Either that, or we may be in for a surprise at MWC Shanghai 2019.
