A Redmi flagship phone with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor is in the works. The confirmation comes straight from the horse’s mouth although there seems to be no definite time-frame for the launch yet. Redmi chief Lu Weibing has shared the information on Chinese social media website Weibo after discussing the future roadmap of the independent Xiaomi sub-brand with his R&D team. Basis of what has been shared, Redmi is currently working on two devices, the Redmi Note 7 Pro which is set to launch this month, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 flagship that’s set to launch sometime later this year.

No further details about the upcoming Redmi flagship have been shared although it would be a big change from past Redmi. Redmi has long been known for its affordable devices, that hovered under the Rs 20,000 price bracket. That seems to be the case still, only now, the company is looking to do a Poco as an independent sub-brand of Xiaomi. This means, even though the new-age Redmi phones will be very aggressively priced, they will be home to the latest and greatest of specs. The Redmi Note 7 is a classic example. The Redmi Note 7 starts at around Rs 10,000 and boasts of high-end specs like a 48MP rear camera. The upcoming flagship phone with Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 could take things to an all new level.

While details about this flagship phone are scarce for now, Redmi has announced that it will launch a more potent variant of the Redmi Note 7, aka the Redmi Note 7 Pro, in China this month. The Redmi Note 7 Pro is expected to pack slightly better hardware especially in the camera department.

Xiaomi has confirmed that the Redmi Note 7 Pro will also sport a 48MP primary rear camera like the Redmi Note 7, but it will come with a better sensor. While the Redmi Note 7 Pro uses a Samsung-sourced GM1 sensor, the Redmi Note 7 Pro will come with Sony’s IMX586 which is the same sensor that is also found in the Honor View 20. The Redmi Note 7 was apparently supposed to come with the Sony IMX586 sensor but instead it had to go with the Samsung GM1 due to supply constraints. The Redmi Note 7 Pro is also expected to cram a new processor, among other things.
