Samsung is prepping the Galaxy A2 Core Android Go phone to possibly take on the Xiaomi Redmi Go. While design specifics of the phone in question have been posted by Samsung itself through a user manual, its entire spec sheet has leaked online – all hinting at imminent launch in the days to come.

Speaking of specs, the Samsung Galaxy A2 Core is said to come with a 5-inch qHD TFT display with a 540x960 pixel resolution and conventional 16:9 aspect ratio – meaning thick bezels. The Android Go phone is said to be powered by Samsung’s in-house Exynos 7870 processor with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage which will also be expandable via a microSD card.

The Galaxy A2 Core is further said to sport a 5MP rear camera (front camera unspecified) and a 2,600mAh battery with micro-USB charging.

As is the case with all Android Go phones, the Samsung Galaxy A2 Core will be also geared towards an audience that is looking to make a switch from a feature phone to a smartphone – without burning a hole in their pocket. Its main USP being its Android Go software which is essentially a trimmed down version of the stock Android software you find in Google’s own Pixel phones.

It is a little disappointing that the Galaxy A2 Core is said to run Android 8.1 Oreo Go edition out-of-the-box though and not Android Pie - hopefully it will be updated to Pie soon enough.

In other news, Xiaomi has launched the Redmi Go in India at a price of Rs 4,499. It comes with a 5-inch display with 720p resolution. The phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor with 1GB RAM and 8GB of internal storage which is expandable using a dedicated micro-SD card slot. The dual-SIM phone supports 4G LTE connectivity and pack a 3,000mAh battery. On the camera front, the Redmi Go comes with an 8MP rear camera and a 5MP front-facing camera. The Redmi Go also runs Android 8.1 Oreo Go edition.
